About The Broadmoor
Capote loved The Broadmoor and returned on multiple occasions throughout his life, not just in 1963. During the 1967 filming of the In Cold Blood movie adaptation, he hosted dinners for friends in the hotel's Penrose Room, its Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond flagship restaurant. He even had a signature line he'd say to the Maître d' on his way out each night: "I want to thank you so much for being so kind to my dinner guests." The Broadmoor wasn't where Capote wrote his true crime masterwork: that happened in Kansas motel rooms and later in Spain and Switzerland. But it became something more personal. The Broadmoor was a recurring retreat where he could step outside the grim subject matter -- 4 1/2 hours away.
Literary significance
No. The Broadmoor's named/dedicated space instead honors its founders: the Penrose Suite, which was Julie Penrose's actual former sixth-floor residence from 1944–1957.
