Lindeth Howe — Bowness-On-Windermere, United Kingdom
About Lindeth Howe
Lindeth Howe was built in 1879 as a holiday home for a wealthy Manchester mill owner. It later passed to Bruce Vernon Wentworth of Wentworth Castle, and the Potter family were among his guests, so Beatrix Potter first knew the house as a visitor, and she's known to have written some of her famous children's stories in the early 1900s during those stays. After her father died, she bought the house outright in 1915 for her mother to live in, then inherited it herself 18 years later when her mother passed. It's today's Potter Room where the author resided, but there's an upside to visitors who don't snag the bedroom: the entire property was the author's private home and is dedicated to that literary history.
Literary significance
The hotel keeps historic photographs by Potter's father Rupert Potter (himself a keen photographer) and letters Beatrix sent to her publishers while staying there. Reception also has a wall timeline of images and information on the house's history. The hotel's own logo is reproduced in Beatrix Potter's actual handwriting, done with permission from Penguin (her publisher). There's a whimsical "butterfly trail" carpet leading to the bar, Peter Rabbit-themed statues and wall hangings (like plates and art, buat also collages of old book pages as wall decor), and statues scattered through the property, and tartan fabrics in some of the classic rooms. Guest photos show window seats and dressing tables in some bedrooms in a period-appropriate touch.
