El Tovar — Grand Canyon, AZ, United States

About El Tovar

El Tovar's core guest-room block is the original 1905 building (95 rooms, designed by Charles Whittlesey); the documented post-1905 additions are ground-floor public spaces — a music room converted to guest suites in 1940, and a lounge, dining room, and north porch added in the 1950s — not new upper floors. That makes it likely the third-floor suite sits within the original 1905 footprint rather than a later wing, though a 1983 renovation (new windows, bathrooms, carpet, heating) and a 2005 $5 million anniversary renovation mean its interior finishes are not original — and, as already noted, no record assigns Grey to this particular suite.

Literary significance

One themed room (Zane Grey Suite, decorated with Western art, film posters, and his books); building itself is a preserved 1905 National Historic Landmark.
